 Big Pagoda

Genre: Indie

Bio: South London’s Big Pagoda features vocalists Matthew Howes and Matthew Osborne, guitarist Joe Pym and drummer Toby Hayter. The quartet played in various bands together in their early 20s and formed Big Pagoda in 2017 after the two Matthews found themselves writing moody electronic shoegaze in a house share in Ealing. Big Pagoda released their debut collaboration with up and coming Producer Duncan Pym in July 2018.

Why We Like It: It’s a chilled glistening number laced with ethereal guitars soaring and gliding over punchy delicate drums and lush breezy soundscapes. The airy guitars jab and weave through the delicate sweet melody adding flickers of scintillation and a stinging zest to this buoyant gem. Jesse Jo Stark

Genre: Alternative Rock

Bio: Los Angeles-based rock artist Jesse Jo Stark has released her highly anticipated debut EP Dandelion. The album was written and produced by Jesse Jo, her guitarist Thomas Hunter and Dan Taylor (The Heavy). Margot Polo

Genre: indie

Bio: California-based Margot Polo is the solo project of David Provenzano,singer/guitarist of Fialta and Sherwood.As a solo artist and producer, Provenzano leans even further into the world of the electro-synth pop, turning to 90s and early-2000s pop and R&B for inspiration while ditching the philosophical in favor of fun, tongue-in-cheek lyrics.In summer of 2017, he released a series of singles to Spotify and iTunes. 

Track: Dance With Me

When asked about the lyrics, Provenzano admits that the song is about the night he met his wife at a bar, where his band at the time was playing. “I remember thinking whoa, this is a really cute girl,” he recalls. “I was totally thrown off my game. I was so awkward; I didn’t even ask for her number. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if I had been more confident in that moment, what would it be like to be one of those guys who can just walk up to a girl and say ‘Fuck it, I like you. Let’s make something happen!’ The song is me rewriting that night from that guy’s perspective.”

Why We Like It: It’s a slinky funky track dripping in swagger and infectious grooves that make you want to get up and dance. Flashing synth swirls add a euphoric vibe while sticky beat slaps and jangly guitar injection provide that feet shuffling zealousness that floods the track with vibrancy and zesty refreshing vibes. Its a catchy number full of charisma and charm with a smooth melody and crisp clean production.

Genre: Alternative rock

Bio: London newcomers Earhart are named after trailblazing aviator Amelia Earhart, the band attracted widespread praise throughout the online community earlier this year with their infectious, hook-laden debut release A Cross and look set to make waves on the live circuit in the coming months.

About the track frontman Joe Tennant explained: “It’s part truth and part fantasy, moving forward with retrospection, glimpses of the past and of the future. Living in your imagination often seems just as real as living in the ‘real world’ to me. The Mocking Jays

Genre: Pop Rock

Bio: Hailing from Nottingham, The Mocking Jays are a five-piece pop-rock band that have effortlessly created a deft balance of pop sensibility and rock and roll swagger that, since forming in 2014, has allowed them to rapidly make a name for themselves, both within their native East Midlands, and across the UK. Though crucial early support from the likes of 6Music and BBC Introducing, as well as festival appearances at the likes of Y-Not, have done nothing to hamper the band’s reputation, it’s largely down to the inherent appeal of their own brand of idiosyncratic indie-pop.

Why We Like It: This bubbly indie pop gem bounces along with an infectious beat upon a honey drizzled melody and sassy slick instrumental backdrop. Henry Chadwick

Bio: Henry’s debut EP, ‘Guest at Home’, which was released in 2016 garnered critical acclaim. His breakout single “Alright,” has reached over 100,000 plays on Spotify, and he shows no sign of slowing down. Teaming up on the new record with legendary producer, Rob Schnapf, who has worked with Elliot Smith, Kurt Vile, Beck and The Vines to name a few, Henry is about to share his new album ‘Marlin Fisher’ which is set for release 31st August. Henry acted as a multi-instrumentalist again, playing drums, guitar, bass and keys on the record. Why We Like It:  It’s a woozy dreamy number with a luscious pop-ish melody filled with hints of psychedelia. It’s a dreamy sun kissed laid back track that still packs in some vibrant vivid instrumentation to make for a wholly satisfying listen. Bio: The Limerick-born, Galway-based, songwriter has made a name for himself performing his self-penned songs. He first started writing songs between busking sessions on a San Diego boardwalk. Since then, he has honed his performance skills, playing wherever he happens to end up, ranging from rooftop fiestas while living in Andalucia to bars in Northern Vietnam to music festivals located not too far from the arctic circle.Though he has lived all over Ireland, Dylan’s musical home is Galway, where he has been heavily involved in the music scene as member of Citog Records for the better part of the last decade. He has performed onstage with artists such as Steven Sharpe, Emma Langford, Tracy Bruen and My Fellow Sponges and has supported artists such as Ben Caplan and Jake Clemons.

Genre: Gritty Post-Punk

Bio: Dead Naked Hippies thrashed into life in late 2016. The trio, bolstered by let-loose front woman Lucy Jowett alongside band mates Joe Clarke (guitar) and Jacob Marston (drums), have cemented their take-your-head-off wall of sound, dancing around trashy alt rock & punchy post-punk. Since their inception, they have received love from BBC Introducing. The band have shared stages with the likes of Dream Wife & Le Butcherettes and in 2017 played to a sold out crowd at Live at Leeds, which lead to a slot on the Festival Republic stage at Leeds Festival 2017.

Why We Like It: It’s a blistering ear bleeding blast of punk rock that begins chilled calm and luring as a low-key guitar and drum groove teamed with cooing vocals introduce the track soft and lulling before its slaps you in the face with its fiery chorus. Dead Naked Hippies blend the luscious sweet and lacerating sour seamlessly. The scorching distorted guitar crash and shred through the chorus and punchy drum pummels and batters creating a pulverising backdrop for Jowett’s dynamic powerful vocals. Bio: UK post punk icons Gang of Four have posted a new video for their latest single ‘Lucky’, taken off ahead of a new Gang of Four EP titled ‘Complicit’ which was co-produced by the band’s Andy Gill, alongside Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode) and Ross Orton (M.I.A., Arctic Monkeys). The EP, from a band recently quoted as a touchstone for musicians as diverse as St Vincent, Frank Ocean, James Murphy and Pharrell Williams.

Speaking about the track Gang of Four’s Andy Gill says; “It’s about how luck defines more than we imagine. You might think of the words from Macbeth concerning life being an hour upon the stage where the walking shadow struts and frets but can change nothing. A parallel idea is that luck may have as much impact on the course of a life than anything an individual does. As in Sartre’s ‘les jeux sont faits’, action, truth, morality will always play second fiddle to luck.”

Why We Like It:  It’s a slick fuzzed strut of infectious musicianship. Bio: Leeds band The Harriets are Daniel-Parker Smith (guitar and other instruments, baritone vocals, jawline) and Ben Schrodel (bass and other instruments, tenor vocals, Roman nose). The Interrupters

Bio: Los Angeles ska-punk band The Interrupters will release their third studio album Fight the Good Fight on June 29th via Hellcat Records.Formed in 2011, The Interrupters came together when the Bivina brothers (guitarist Kevin Bivona, bassist Justin Bivona, drummer Jesse Bivona) found themselves on bills with Aimee during a 2009 tour. Bio: PREP came about as an alias for 4 artists with an eye-watering list of credits under their belts. Co-writer and keyboard player Llywelyn Ap Myrddin – a classical composer keen on electronica – began writing instrumentals with House music producer / drummer Guillaume Jambel (GIOM), who has previously headlined Fabric and collaborated with Defected Records. Llywelyn was thrown by the response to these tracks from Grammy nominee Dan Radclyffe, noted for his work on recordings by Drake and AlunaGeorge. 10 O’Clock Chemical

Bio: 10 O’Clock Chemical are comprised of songwriter, keyboardist and vocalist Rhys, drummer Danny, bassist Josh and guitarist Jack. The four of them met through Stoke On Trent’s local music scene, sharing a deep love for rock and electronica. In addition to the core lineup is a mysterious cyber entity called Zed, who carries administrative duties for the band and even makes the odd cameo appearance. Frontman Alfie Smith explains the meaning behind the song: “I was self medicating a broken heart and head which ultimately led to turning to others for help.”

Why We Like It: It’s a woozy airy healthy dose of shoegaze pop that packs in some dreamy honey coated melodies to tranqualise your mind in a light breezy bubble. With sharp distorted guitars adding a dash of dizzying bedazzlement and spiky zest this track presents you a luscious sweet daydream bliss but with a piercing edge. The heavily layered swirling guitars provide a shrilling wall of sound that is crafted to a refined elegance yet appears laid back almost lazy. Sublime listen.

Kalpa

Genre: Indie

Bio: Kalpa are an indie 5-piece band from Bath. After a successful 2017 touring with Voyages through Bath to Liverpool, supporting Flyte on their UK Album tour in Bath and King No-One at Liverpool Arts Club, Kalpa are kicking up the dust and gaining serious traction. 2018 started off with their debut single launch, backed up by supporting High Tyde at the iconic Thekla, Bristol.

Why We Like It: It’s vibrant indie pop that sprinkles little sun kissed bursts of scintillation through every note. With zesty jangly guitars gleaming throughout animated peppy drums its instantly likeable and radiant. The sweet melty melody glides upon the vivid instrumentation with ease as the dynamic passionate vocals flood the track with emotion. It’s a beaming infectious little ditty.

Why We Like It: It’s a breezy atmospheric number that packs oodles of passion.Mature and anthemic this punchy track builds and progresses so that the chorus hits hard. A rich rumbly rhythm creates a fluctuating foundation for the sweet toned guitars to flicker and rebound off. The melody is delicate and lulling for the verses while the guitars freely swirl about the track with an ethereal aerial charm. Its well crafted and maturely written. A powerful display from Electric Shore.

Genre: Almost pop

Bio: My Pleasure is from Hull, UK and describes his music as “almost pop”

Track: Drama at the Gala

About the track My Pleasure said: “Drama at the Gala is pretty much the song I always wanted to write, in which several different instruments spar with each other for attention and you’re never sure where the actual hook of the song is. It was especially nice to have my friend Carl Macklin on the drum set, fighting against a Casio drum machine.”

Why We Like It: It slaps a hosts of sounds into your ear drums causing the most contrasting assault to the senses. With sharp zealous guitar stings jabbing through fuzzed distortion while sweet little jingles lull and delicately soothe with a dolly like effect. Its packed with punk attitude and heavily layered beats which break for a stripped back acoustic verse. Though it’s a contrasting dizzying display each section is sublimely created giving a catchy satisfying track that quenches all appetites.

Bio: Bath family of five, Voyages have released their new single ‘New Year’s Day’. Voyages is the creation of singer/songwriter, Will Walter whose work began in Spring 2017 in his home studio in the West Country. Enriched by psychedelic sounds, Walter’s journey started to create a modern alternative production and a new sound from everything he loved about his record collection before adding a band of brothers together for the ride. The band, who now perform and record as a 5-piece, are twins, Will and Tim Walter on vocals/keys, their brother Ollie Walter on guitar, alongside another set of twins in James and Lewis Woods who take care of the rhythm section on bass and drums.Their debut EP entitled New Year’s Day has been recently released on newly pressed limited edition vinyl.

Why We Like It: It’s a twinkling retro 60’s flavoured track doused in trippy blissed out psychedelia. A dreamy vocal glides upon the sweet melody while swirling synths and tapping rhythm create the perfect mellowed out state of euphoria. The track builds into a crescendo with 16 layers of vocal harmony over a 3 round vocal pass forming a lush rich texture to wrap your ears around.

Philip Morgan Lewis

Bio: UK based blues rocker Philip Morgan Lewis has released a music video for his single ‘Sinner’ taken from his ‘Grief Harbour’ album which is released via Moonalizer Records. The London East End singer, songwriter, producer Philip Morgan Lewis combines alternative, blues, rock and folk influences. Philip writes and produces his songs playing most of the instruments. A nominee at the British Blues Awards, Philip features as producer alongside Gordon Raphael (The Strokes) on Elêphant’s album (RYP recordings).

Track: ‘Sinner’

Why We Like It: With a stomping rhythm forming the back bone of this darkly hued track ‘Sinner’ instantly grabs the listener by the ears, slithers and hustles its way into your brain. Infectiously catchy with steamy wailing guitars and smokey raspy vocals smothered on top of a sultry bluesy outfit it’s a cool swagger soaked rough and ready number. With a sing along friendly chorus backed by gospel like soul, this track makes for some hefty listening.
