Belfast’s Robocobra Quartet have returned with new single ‘Heaven’. The track is the first new material in three years. The news comes on the heels of their recent signing to Deptford-based label First Taste Records and the announcement of a highly anticipated new album to come later in the year.Robocobra Quartet are a collective of six members of wildly different musical backgrounds swapping in and out to make a touring quartet, which has taken them across Europe to Montreux Jazz Festival, Latitude Festival, and as far as Inversia Festival in the polar north of Russia, all while receiving acclaim from the likes of The Quietus, The Line Of Best Fit, Prog, and BBC Radio 6.
‘Heaven’ is a fine example of Robocobra Quartet’s catchy experimental sound. Chris W Ryan’s hypnotic vocals brood atop a unique instrumental sound of rich rhythms and intricate layering. Within the track’s soundscape, heavy bass lines groove against pulsing drums, palpitating keys and elements of jazz on saxophone – the effect is an exciting, intriguing display of musicianship that sounds fresh even after repeat listens. ‘Heaven’ is a thrilling listening experience that boasts Robocobra Quartet’s deft musical prowess. Looking forward to the new album.
Speaking on ‘Heaven’, Ryan says: “Heaven is about the cult-like mania of capitalism. I grew up listening to Dead Kennedys and always liked how they would write songs from the perspective of a character they didn’t necessarily agree with. There’s something fascinating about the stories that emerge and I wanted to get inside that extremely chaotic and self-absorbed headspace. I loved the idea of singing as someone so narcissistic they find their newborn child beautiful just because they look alike.”

The band display their knack with earworm melodies and tight well-paced musicianship as they blend indie elements with subtle moments of pop to create an enjoyable listening experience for listeners to indulge in. Looking forward to hearing more from this four-piece.
About the track, Ben Lewis said: “Headstart was written at a time when I just felt inferior to everyone. It seemed everyone I knew on social media was moving on with their lives and doing amazing things while I was stuck in the same place. It kind of tackles that issue through the eyes of someone who went through a difficult relationship and experienced this downfall.”
Alternative Metal band Concrete Colossus have released their new EP, ‘Dead Man’s Hand’. Dallas, Texas-based band Concrete Colossus was formed out of the love of jamming. The five band members had previously been in different bands, developing their skills and honing their individual sounds. When frontman Brandon returned from the military wanting to get back into music he slowly gathered the collective that would come to be Concrete Colossus around him. Initially a jamming project, they quickly realised they were onto something.
Riding in on an explosive soundscape of pure unadulterated fury, ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ is a hard-hitting collection of alternative rock. Not for the faint-hearted, this five-track EP pulses with a raw battering of heavy instrumentation. Utilizing jagged lacerations on guitars with rampant bloodthirsty bass grooves mangled between mammoth drums; songs like ‘Ezekiel 25:17’ and ‘Incarceration’ are ground-shaking forces of nature. Filled with coarse metal elements, growling vocals and savage instrumental builds that surge through a thick alternative wall of sound ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ is an enjoyable maelstrom of mighty musicianship from Concrete Colossus.
