Sleepless Beauty

Having got her start on a LGBT/womxn in music DJ course, Irish DJ Sleepless Beauty plays the festival circuit, spinning electro, nu-disco, synth, and tech-house. She has played at The Button Factory, Lucky’s, Ruin Bar, Drop Dead Twice, Street 66 and Berlin Bar. Sleepless Beauty is a member of The Gash Collective, a resident at Doyle’s and Lost Lane, and has performed at Body & Soul, KnockanStockan and All Together Now. She closed out the Bandstand in Body and Soul on Friday night 12-2AM at Electric Picnic. Sleepless Beauty has a collection of songs on mixtape. Indie Buddie decided to have a listen.

Sleepless Beauty is a trailblazer bringing together elements of disco, tech house and jungle to create an authentic and wholly immersing sound. Sleepless Beauty keeps her mixes light and refreshing as swirling synths are richly weaved between intricate percussive lines and seamless song shifts to create a satisfying listening experience. Oozing pulsing base lines and echoing vocals the vibe never falters. ‘Tribal Fiesta’ which is perhaps my favourite mix so far brings the summer breeze right into your ears transporting the listener to a tropical sunkissed world of Sleepless Beauty’s creation.

Killer house beats keep the momentum bubbling throughout as Sleepless Beauty meanders between hypnotic techno and light disco with ease allowing the dynamic synths to playfully move between thick, heavy bass builds and sticky beat slaps. Mixes such as Pride 2020 are driven by a robust sequence of notes and beats which are made complete by vocals and tunes that you can’t help but sing along to. Sleepless Beauty is an extremely talented DJ with mixes doused in driving energy with an understated anthemic feel.

Human Machine Interface ‘Futurespective’

Mastered in Berlin, ‘Futurespective’ is the debut album to come from Human Machine Interface. Inspired by travelling, ‘Futurespective’ was created everywhere; on the train, on the plane, in different countries and different soundscapes from cities, and used all types of equipment ranging from state of the art studios to a simple bluetooth speaker. Human Machine Interface creates his sound by using analogue and digital synthesisers and programming with Pure Data. Known for an immersive and mesmerizing live show, Human Machine Interface has played all across Europe and cites Kraftwerk and Karlheinz Stockhausen as key influences.

‘Futurespective’ is a unique and obscure collection of music as Human Machine Interface creates an expansive wall of sound through the use of dark, intense and sometimes disco-infused soundscapes. Utilizing sticky beats and swirling electronic pulses the songs submerge the listener in a futuristic world of Human Machine Interface’s creation. From the ominous synth progressions in ‘Why Not Swear’, funky disco elements in ‘Close Your Eyes’ to brooding asphyxiating soundscapes in ‘Retrospective of Time’, each track draws you deeper into the album’s core. Richly Layered textures and syncopated beats provide both flashing moments of scintillation and dark shadows of mystery with some earthy light fluttering embellishments in between. These elements are best shown in the immersive ‘Cordobazo’.

This instrumental album is a unique and engaging collection of tracks from an intriguing artist.

Two Sevens ‘Modern Age’

‘Modern Age’ is the new single from indie-electro-pop band Two Sevens. Recorded in a studio in Camberwell, London, where the band formed, ‘Modern Age’ shows off the vibrant nature of Two Sevens while making a poignant observation about freedom and the trappings of modern society. The stunning video, directed by Laurence Dutton, is set against a backdrop of the city’s materialism yet oozes energy, optimism and positivity. London-based Two Sevens is a three-piece band, formed of Sonya Frances (vocals), Matthew Davis (song, instruments), and Paul Bateman (instruments). The band’s self-titled debut mini-album was initially only released on vinyl but has just been released digitally along with this brand new single ‘Modern Age’. The debut album includes the track ‘207’ co-written with Stuart Moxham from iconic band Young Marble Giants.

‘Modern Age’ is a shimmering electronic pop number saturated in sharp production and slick 80’s infused musicianship. The song swirls in a flurry of synths while the acute fuzzed guitars pierce the asphyxiating soundscape with zealous animation. The band have created a lively synth pop tune with dark looming electronics which exudes an ominous tone while the sweet vocals and lush melody lull over the bustling backdrop. There is an instant rush of energy through the track while the flickering beat creates a sturdy foundation for the piercing melodic guitars and synths to ricochet off. ‘Modern Age’ is an intoxicating guzzle of synth pop.

James Lonergan ‘Tip the Can’

Dublin artist James Lonergan is set to release his new single ‘Tip the Can’ on November 27th. Lonergan joined his first band aged 10, since then he has steadily fronted bands – most notably as the vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter of the recently disbanded progressive band, Synk.

‘Tip the Can’ is a wonderful display of Lonergan’s unique and hypnotic musicianship. Lonergan uses his wide sonic range to simmer his instrumentation, carefully creating rich layers of shadowy soundscapes. The track’s electronics haunt through a tapping beat while rumbling distortion and bubbling synths build suspense in the background. The only relief from the muggy wall of sound is Lonergan’s reverb-laced vocals and the soft keys which add glimmers of innocence, while at the same time lightening the thick asphyxiating soundscapes.

This track boasts unique production and the enticing obscurity of Lonergan, as he lures the listener into his mesmerising, musical depths. ‘Tip the Can’ is an enthralling, obscure track from James Lonergan. It is beginning to feel as if there is no genre or style he can not twist and make his own.

‘Tip the Can’ is set for release on November 27th. For more you check out James Lonergan on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/James-Lonergan-102814768245783

Jape’s Columbia Mills ‘The Greatest Love’ Remix

Following the release of their critically acclaimed second album ‘CCTV’ earlier this year, Columbia Mills have announced they have teamed up with some of their favourite artists Jape, Girl Band, Ryan Vail and Get Well Soon, for their ‘Remixed EP’. This EP allowed the artists to create their own interpretation of tracks from ‘CCTV’ and put their creative spin on the songs. The first release from the remixed EP is Jape’s remix of their song ‘The Greatest Love’.

With flashing electronics, lush textures and melodies Richie Egan’s ( aka Jape ) remix of ‘The Greatest Love’ takes a more electronic dance form. Japes interpretation uses skittish beats, desert vibes and rushing waves of synths to create a 70’s-esque dance floor banger. Rich rhythms adorn the backdrop with an almost Salsa rhythmic bounce while the reverb vocals and swirling soundscapes create darker undertones. The remix is truly compelling.

Frontman from Columbia Mills Fiachra Treacy speaks about how the idea came about for the remixed EP:

Above all else, the members of Columbia Mills are massive music fans. We spend most of our free time attending gigs of all genres and discussing our favourite artists.  Our broad range of influences can be heard in our music, so we thought it would be a good idea to ask the people who influence us most, to remix some of our tracks. We put out the feelers and we were delighted that everyone agreed to be a part of this EP. Getting the mixes back from each artist was like waking up on Christmas morning. To have your favourite artist remix your tracks was an awesome feeling for us. Given the circumstances we find ourselves in, there has been a massive sense of community amongst artists of all genres. We are all in the same boat. Some of us are unsure as to whether we keep paddling, or whether to get off before it sinks entirely. This project, and the support that we have gotten from our friends and fellow artists, have galvanized and inspired us to keep going.  It has inspired us to plough ahead and write our 3rd album. This EP represents the sense of community that has been created by the decimation of our industry. 5 artists of different genres coming together to support each other when it is needed the most.Thank you, Richie, Foxy (and the lads from Girl band), Ryan, and Konstantin for your genius. We are inspired and truly grateful.”

PureGrand ‘Such A Fright’

Hot off the heels of his atmospheric synth pop single ‘Timeline’, PureGrand (Luke Faulkner) returns with his new single ‘Such A Fright’, accompanied with a self made video which parodies the pressures and hypocrisy of the modern workplace but dresses it up in the stylings of the 1990s.The song was written and produced by Faulkner and is the latest single to be taken from his new body of work which is inspired by social themes felt by young millennials and by Faulkner’s own experiences in the past year and exploring them through the sounds and aesthetics of 90s and millennium pop.

‘Such A Fright’ is an intoxicating slice of electronic pop as PureGrand uses building soundscapes, catchy melodies and earnest songwriting to create a danceable dark tune. The slapping beats scuff the atmosphere in ominous undertones while the coiling electronics shuffle with an 80’s hue and disco vibe. With a bittersweet pop melody and sombre vocal delivery the track is a lonely bop brimming with lush textures and surging electronic pop sensibilities. Lyrically the song illustrates the claustrophobic sensations and the trappings of dealing with anxiety. PureGrand use retro synths and infectious melodies to create an asphyxiating atmosphere showcasing brief moments of innocent release to compliment the tracks lyrical theme. ‘Such A Fright’ is an infectious meaningful number from PureGrand.

Jack Rua ‘Isolation’

Irish glam-pop artist Jack Rua has released his new single ‘Isolation’. Writing music at the age of 15, first for a rock band and then as a soloist, he renamed himself Jackal in 2013. Backed by an 8 piece band, his theatrical and energetic stage show saw him perform at venues such as Whelans, The Academy, The Mercantile and Vicar Street. Graduating with a BA in Commercial Modern Music from BIMM Dublin, Jack took a hiatus from performing in 2017 and moved to New York City where he immersed himself in the cultural scenes of drag, burlesque and theatre – shaping his sound around these creative concepts.

‘Isolation’ is a glorious display of Jack Rua’s shimmering pop as he takes an emotive theme and shrouds it in infectious glittering electronics and bubbling rhythms. The song is glowing with Rua’s refined musicianship and impressive songwriting prowess as light verses simmer while entwining synths and ethereal elements contrast the thematically darker undertone. The track has invigorating bursts of release between the coiling beats while Rua’s smooth warm vocals ooze swagger and charm.

‘Isolation’ is a richly textured track exuding finger clicking elements and catchy soundscapes. Rua’s ability to provide a danceable catchy tune with relatable lyrics and conflicting sonic twists is masterful. Jack Rua is an artist to keep an eye on.

About the track Jack Rua said : “It was written about how I was separated from my boyfriend for 2 months because of the COVID pandemic. We had only just gotten into a relationship and were enjoying the throws of the infamous honeymoon period, so to be separated from each other for such a period of time for reasons beyond our control was very difficult.I love this song because it really captures what I was experiencing. I was trying to remain positive and remind myself that things were only temporary, but still feeling a sense of hopelessness and a complete lack of control of the situation. I knew what I was doing was right morally in the context of a pandemic, but it felt so incorrect personally and all of these conflicting emotions and ideas were driving me crazy.”
