Bristol indie rock band Three Kings High have released a video for their track ‘Bone Dry’. This engrossing track creeps and crawls with a dark gritty riff driving it to its ominous glory. It grooves with a shimmying rhythm that is dance worthy while a catchy melody seeps into your brain leaving you singing along mindlessly. The punchy beat and attitude soaked vocals slap a healthy does of punk into the track while slick guitars steam and shred creating an effervescent fuzz to the song. It’s cool, slinky yet packs a hefty punch. The beat pulses and pounds through you while it holds you hooked firmly in its grasp. It’s an impressive track with a lot of body and movement to appeal to everyone.
Nashville indie rock band Kios have released their new single ‘Right Now’. The three piece which is made up of Cole Suddarth (vocals/guitar), Aaron Krak (drums), and Mitch Wollenberg (bass) have created a clean crisp sound that gushes with luscious indie pop and vibrant instrumentation. ‘Right Now’ hops along at a steady pace as zesty guitars swirl about the sweet delicious melody while cool vocals chill the tone in a laid back effortless manner making the track a sweet freeze pop of delight.Though it flurries along with a sugar coated spring in its step the song builds becoming more fiery and edgy as punchy drums stomp while guitars shred with a razor sharp sting making for an intense sublime crescendo. It’s another well layered vivid, sun kissed track from the trio.
Brand new Irish band Billow Wood (formerly known as Flat Out) are a male/female four-piece who fuse their unique brand of instrumentation with multi-vocals and harmonies. Billow Wood are influenced by Irish and mainstream music and are now moving in a new direction often accompanied by a bass and drums, creating their own unique brand of folk, indie, pop and rock. The band have had a whirlwind of success with outstanding performances across the globe including Ireland, Europe and Africa as well as residency in Raglan Road, Orlando. They have also already performed in Indianapolis and the Irish Heritage Centre in Cincinnati as well as the ” Sláinte Asso” festival in France. The band consisting of Mark O’Donnell on fiddle and guitar, Harry Lawlor on Harp and guitar, Ciara O’Donnell on Bodhrán, flute and whistles and Bríd O’Donnell on accordion recently released their debut EP ‘Can You See Me’ to a sold out EP launch in Whelan’s Dublin.
‘Can You See Me’ is a five track collection brimming with warm, hearty melodies and glorious harmonies wrapped in a tight bow of rich vibrant instrumentation. From the magical twinkling harp opening of ‘Turn out the Light’ it fast becomes apparent this four piece know exactly where to place each instrument to fill out and lushly layer their tracks. The songs flood and surge with affluent textures and heart warming glows while maintaining a folky bounce and energy. The elegant ‘Two Doves’ uses tender harp glitters between cosy fiddle injections while the shift between female and male vocals adds a refreshing contrast throughout. The sweet harmonies blend flawlessly and so perfectly creating a sublime melodious quality that makes their tracks easy to listen to. ‘Hello Hello’ once again buoyantly springs with pure heartfelt passion and joy while filling you with homely vibes. The tracks are filled with that proud to be Irish charisma that is home baked, wholesome and authentic without becoming too cliche. Their tender songs such as ‘The Game’ are sweet, delicate and graceful as strings swoon and glide while guitar sways and the gentle drum taps create a sturdy backdrop for the immaculate vocals to float above. It’s twinkling starlit beauty and waltz ready which showcases a more fragile and sweet side to Billow Wood. ‘Dreamland’ closes the EP with an upbeat rhythmic hop while a pop drizzled melody sprinkles a bright infectiousness onto the folky traditional backdrop.
Billow Wood have created a collection of tracks that warm the cockles of your heart. They surge richly diverse soundscapes into each aspect of their songs to create a wholly satisfying listen. Admittedly folky, traditional flavoured tunes are not my usual cup of tea but this EP was so richly flavoured it was a delightful listen.
Michael Jablonka has released his new single ‘Flump’. This searing track marks a grittier grunge infested shift in Jablonka’s sound. It’s a fierce shredding slice of indie rock, as raw course guitar riffs lacerate with adrenaline surging force through the groovy rhythm. With its pedal to the metal potency, Jablonka walks the fine line between edgy ferocity and chilled suaveness. His vocals are as cool as a cucumber while blistering guitar and pummelling drums twist, coil and combust behind him. This rich dynamic track is another fantastic reason to keep an eye out for this guy. His talent and skills are one to be admired and his tunes, frenzy inducing dynamite.
You can catch Michael Jablonka live on Sat 19 May at The Queen’s Hotel, Brighton (Great Escape Festival)
Arctic Monkeys have released their highly anticipated new album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’. It’s an album which will divide and conquer. At the first listen to the crooning smooth fluidity and leisurely pace of the tracks there is a suspense and doubt that grows like a tumour in your brain before you take a step back and see the album as a whole. It’s an experience, a bit different but as a collective piece of work, it’s a bloody fine display of refined meticulous musicianship. Turner has been flexing his lyricist muscles and in this sixth album he’s primed and ready to mind boggle with encryptions and witty obscurities. This effort sees the guitar rock of ‘AM’ take a back seat as keys become the prime instrument. It’s spacey with a noticeable lack of sing along choruses but what it appears to lack at first disperses between the mysterious hazy synths, 70’s vibes and lush arrangements.
‘The Star Treatment’ sees Turner narrate the lyrics like a neo-noir crime anthology film reflection through a creamy smooth backdrop of twinkling keys and lush whining backing vocals. It sets a black and white motion picture scene filled with a classy lounge bar drunken contemplation. This vibe carries throughout the album. If ‘The Star Treatment’ has you listening with gritted teeth ‘One Point Perspective’ slowly eases you into the concept of the album as it broods with lavish strings, sweet falsetto vocals and slick bass grooves wrapping you slowly and securely into its luxuriousness- seducing those doubting thoughts until that steamy guitar solo hooks you firmly in its grasp. ‘American Sports’ adds to the intrigue as it grasps the spacey vibe with flighty synths dizzying and flashing between a snappy beat. It’s psychedelic at times as guitars whizz through Turner’s echoed vocals entrapping you into this subtly eccentric spectacle. The title track ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ is Bowie-esque and bizarrely endearing as Turner’s vocals sweetly sprawl over glimmering keys and enigmatic guitars while aerial soundscapes thicken the track creating a suffocating, claustrophobic atmosphere that only the twinkling keys and sweet vocals can break through. ‘Golden Trunks’ presents us with the first pop tinged melody on the album as ominous instrumentation creates a dragging goosebump inducing horror movie sequence. ‘Four Out Of Five’ bounces a melty, honey drizzled melody and groovy rhythmic foundation off the lyrical theme of star ratings. It has a nice lush bridge with glistening keys and ethereal backing vocals which adds a feathery lightness to the vocals and to the rebound and buoyancy of the track. ‘The World’s First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip’ reminds me of Mini Mansions. It has that twisted mystifying obscurity that would fit perfectly on their self titled debut album. The dolly-esque keys with organ tones coated in a delicious melody with that dreamy hazy sun kissed vibe makes for an enthralling listen. There is some residue of the ‘Humbug’ album on the tracks ‘Science Fiction’ and ‘She Looks Like Fun’ the former with its cryptic mystery and psychedelic tinges however the alien pitched whines and creepy format places it firmly within the grasps of the magical world of the ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ album. ‘Batphone’ returns to that bar lounge croon and laid back vibe while album closer ‘The Ultracheese’ glides with a 50/ 60’s -esque waltz. Filled with tenderness and delicacy it’s a sublime number that oozes and seeps passion in the most sweet sway- like manner. Romantically poised with a magnificent guitar feature that just sends swoony chills down your spine while trills on piano lifts it to heavenly heights. This sublime track brings the album to a majestic classy end.
‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ will divide fans but then what good album doesn’t? This collection is a brilliant portrait of the most artistic era of Arctic Monkeys career so far. With a cinematic display that is a little bit uncommercial, stacking soundtrack- like atmospheric soundscapes alongside pop hued melodies, and some bizarre elements between. This collection is more mature and sophisticated. It’s like an aromatized, fortified wine, flavoured with various luscious components- that hits the spot.

You face many difficult obstacles in life especially when you’re in a band and it’s all about how you overcome them and carry on, just like it says in the chorus ‘Pick up and start again’. Indie: (n) an obscure form of rock which you only learn about from someone slightly more hip than yourself.
