Our Worth A Listen Track This Week Comes From Honey Lung

Honey Lung have released their new single ‘Be My Friend’. Newly-signed to the cult indie label Big Scary Monsters (American Football, Martha, Orchards), ‘Be My Friend’ marks the first offering from the band this year as their plans begin to take shape, with a London headliner and several festival appearances already lined up over the coming months. The shoegazers have spent the last two years mastering the live circuit, combining JAWS and Basement tour supports with notable festival slots at the likes of SXSW, Reading & Leeds, Latitude and The Great Escape.

With guitars whirring through a scuzzy grunge backdrop ‘Be My Friend’ announces Honey Lung’s return with raw refined beauty. A sun kissed daydream melody melts effortlessly upon the effervescent backdrop with a shoegaze tonality while the sweet coos and deep gravel on vocals provide character and charm. The glistening melody on guitar weaves and coils zealously between the pummeling drums to create a clamorous fuzz-filled indie-rock foundation that is utterly thrilling. The band presents a tight and sun speckled track overflowing with rich, vibrant, blistering instrumentation. With the perfect bitter sweet ratio ‘Be My Friend’ is a triumphant return.

Discussing the ideas behind their new single, Batten explained: “Lyrically Be My Friend makes a joke of trying to impress someone you admire. We wanted it to be an ironic song that pokes fun at awkward social situations and the funny ways we act just to be liked or feel accepted”.

‘Surrender’ is a funky glimpse of Alexis Kings’ uptempo chic musicianship. With slinky guitar lines slithering through a groove entwined bass this track has an instant strut quality. The band trade in their sun soaked sweet melodic guitar for a light classy flirtation while the steady buoyant drums bubble through the foundation. With Aherne’s velvety rasp on vocals and vibrant melty melody Alexis Kings have created a shimmering feel good gem soaked in cool suave tones and rich rhythms.

About the track Brendan Aherne comments: “We wanted to start writing songs that resonated with our electric audiences and live set. This song in particular felt like a good start, the melodies are reminiscent of an old school R&B record and it’s very bass and beat driven. Lyrically, Surrender is a typical subconscious commentary of someone depicting their frustration at ‘late night feelings’ and essentially falling short in their attempt at playing hard to get. We recorded and produced the track by ourselves. We wanted to really distinguish ourselves sonically with the next few singles, and there’s no better way than to take complete control of the process.”

Our Worth A Listen This Week Comes From Nerves

Dublin based three piece noisy post pop band Nerves have released their new single ‘Glasshouse’. This biting track showcases the bands adept ability to create tense explosive soundscapes with frenetic destructive undertones. The refined competence to which Nerves’ display this skill is something to be admired. It’s complete anarchy crammed into a rapid four minute track. Utterly savage and thrilling this dark fizzing concoction is a sublime assault on the senses by Nerves.

About the track the band said : “Lyrically the song is an outcry against toxic masculinity and its effects on young Irish men and brings up various themes such as fatherhood, Irish education, our drinking culture and religion.”

They have have two successful sold out London shows with fans and taste-makers alike eagerly awaiting new material. The self-proclaimed ‘millennium glam’ rockers have been self-producing their tracks since the get-go – taking their DIY ethos from the bedroom to the stage.

‘I Struggle to Communicate’ is a light stomping of precise indie as Bright Orange Spectacle smear a dash of glam rock into their swagger steeped sound. With confident gritty guitar riffs the band announce the track with a raw edge and charming flamboyance. The punchy rhythm shuffles its way through with foot tapping relentless stamina while the smooth catchy melody and charismatic vocals buoyantly dance and cruise along the bubbling backdrop. The band layer the track superbly to create joyful cheery moments of shimmering key hops and pop sensibilities with a Bright Orange Spectacle twist to create a satisfying finger-clicking good number to immerse yourself in.

On creating the track Charlie added: “We live in a time where everyone has to be a social commentator. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it leads to a certain amount of pressure for bands to make very grand political statements from day one. I kept sitting down to write that song and eventually this came out. It’s just a lot of honesty about my own lack of understanding towards our correct cultural climate. We live in a time where information is so readily available, yet I still feel like I know nothing. Things are bad, obviously things are bad, but that’s about all I know-and that’s fucking depressing. So ‘I Struggle To Communicate’ is just a reaction to my own ignorance and a personal call to arms for me to better facilitate myself with knowledge.”
