Having amassed more than a million streams from singles ‘Can’t Feel Anything’ and ‘Red Run Cold’ since their release in late 2020, and topping the billing on Spotify’s Pop Rock Shot playlist with ‘Red Run Cold’ fast-rising duo World’s First Cinema look to continue the support for their debut EP with new offering ‘Cold Sets In’. World’s First Cinema is comprised of Fil Thorpe ( Neck Deep ) and John Sinclair ( Saint Claire ).
‘Cold Sets In’ is a tender track which displays the mesmerising music and clean cinematic production of World’s First Cinema. The duo create a soundscape filled with contrasting themes of loneliness and hopefulness as warm cello drifts over elegant piano in a playful yet at times sombre manner. Soft electronics twinkle through the tracks ethereal atmosphere while smooth passionate vocals caress a dreamy easy on the ears melody. Wonderfully evocative; ‘Cold Sets In’ is a moving and well crafted track from World’s First Cinema. Keep an eye on these guys.
Speaking about the track, the band said, “The song continues on to lyrically explore how pain and strife can bring you closer to loved ones. But even when that pain causes you to step away, we learn that starting over can be the most important part of the journey. This track is the first ballad esq offering the band has released and acts as a clear indicator that we can expect a more emotional side of this project in the future.”

With a catchy guitar refrain biting down into the alternative stained backdrop ‘Do You Wanna Go?’ presents Mechner’s enticing sound with an anthemic punch and irresistible melody. The guitar weaves its buoyant way through a swirling soundscape while the snappy beat and cinematic tension create a tantalizing listening experience. Mechner uses unique and dramatic musicianship to entice the listener. The rumble on bass coils beneath the light dance infused agitation as if foreshadowing an ominous event while the irresistible melody ferments through the verses. This push and pull effect creates sublime apprehension before the track erupts into its exhilarating chorus. The layering is superb, we see glimpses of pop, smeared upon jaunty indie rock while a bracing alternative soundscape brews a thick sticky concoction through the tracks underbelly, this is all seasoned with a fleshy light coating of tempestuous dance elements. Mechner displays a sublime ability to provide tantalizing intricacies within this track and he does this with dark atmospheric brooding that asphyxiates beneath light pop flashes and chilling vocal manoeuvres. ‘Do You Wanna Go?’ is an infectious, thrilling, juicy and well crafted track from Mechner.
Alice’s Night Circus have released the full-length album ‘Metamorphose’.Sheffield-born Alice (Julia Scott) is classically trained and started singing professionally in her late teens whilst running her own business as a designer of fashion and jewelry. Thanks to her arresting live performances over the past few years, Julia has developed a growing global fan base, playing shows at Zandari Festa Music Festival, Seoul, South Korea, Liverpool Sound City and Mini Herfest at the Tramlines Fringe.
‘Metamorphose’ is a collection of cinematic instrumentally rich tracks held together by Alice’s mesmerising and powerful voice. The album flows fluidly between different styles and genres from an uplifting and empowering opening track ‘Stand Up’ and the pop rock stomped ‘Illuminate’ to the more elegant and passionate slow burners like ‘Never Enough’ and ‘Medusa’ the entire album is brimming with hair raising instrumentals and relatable themes. There is a sublime mix between dark alternative, dreamy new wave and theatrical expression to create a wholly satisfying listening experience. With quirky circus elements in ‘Curious World’, the cabaret swing of ‘Penny Dreadful (Mr Strange)’ and alien – esque electronics in ‘Dark Water’ Alice uses a multitude of unique elements to create and paint the images of the theme of her tracks. Drama and exquisite splendour is the running theme of the album aptly presented through the spectacular ‘Show Must Go On’ as the jagged guitar elements back the powerful stage-show display. The tracks are composed for maximum impact with pulsing heart racking drum beats, swirling electronics, elegant strings and refined production. The unique and rich use of instrumentation and percussion along with Alice’s outstanding vocals and powerful chorus in songs like ‘The Machine’ and final track ‘War of the Worlds’ continue the high energy and intensity of the album without fail.
‘Metamorphose’ is a passionate collection of tracks with tremendous weight and impact that will empower you for your day. Alice’s Night Circus should create a musical with tracks like these – she has the recipe for standing ovations night after night.
Our Worth A Listen Track This Week Comes From The Screens
The Screens are Neil and Colin. They are unique in that they collaborate on all writing and producing yet are rarely in the same room when they do so. Everything is done online. The Screens have a musical history in film and TV music through composing, arranging and/or producing music. Their credits include Kill Bill 2, The Soprano’s, The Simpsons, Superman Returns, West Wing, Lost, 24, Mr & Mrs Smith.Their production credits also include working with artists such as Tom Jones, Paul Weller, Ruby Turner, Will Smith, A Tribe Called Quest and Tony Hadley. They have now released their new single ‘Avalanche’. ‘Avalanche’ is a lavish swoony track theatrically romantic and dramatic with sing along chorus. The sway like simplicity of this sixties-like dreamy track features elegant string and lush backing vocals, its a fanciful feather light emotional burst. Gracefully the track glides with dainty grandeur and class. This emotionally creamy silky song tells a romantic story in a cinematic way that exudes beauty and splendour. Its incredibly lavish and rich with soft delicate textures ironically contrasting the lyrical depiction of the bloody heartache and turmoil of love. ‘Avalanche’ tips its hat to the classic British gangster stories of the sixties and seventies but lavishes in an opulence of strings and theatre. It has a sound far removed from what most artists are trying to create in order to conform to the industries current requirements.

Our Worth A Listen Track This Week Comes In The Form Of Áine Cahill’s ‘Black Dahlia’
Cavan singer-songwriter Áine Cahill has received fantastic exposure recently for having taken part in the 2fm/Oxfam ‘Play The Picnic’ competition. She managed to reach the top 10 for the national contest, which secured her a slot on the Oxjam Stage at this year’s Electric Picnic. Cahill has already released a 5-track EP called ‘Paper Crown,’ which came out shortly before Christmas 2014 and was named the #1 unsigned Irish EP of 2014 by Unsigned and Independent Magazine. She’s also hugely influenced by the jazz of the ’40s and ’50s, and has only recently started working with a band, made up of four musicians, Louise Johnston (piano), Paul McCann (double bass), Sam Geraghty (guitar) and Paul ‘Foxy’ Cox (drums). ‘Black Dahlia’ is the start of a new project Cahill is currently working on with producer Martin Quinn from Jam Studios. The song tells the tragic true story of an unsolved murder in 1940s Hollywood. Cahill portrays this theme to us perfectly, she creates an eerie mysterious atmosphere that calls you as a witness to a tragic scene. With touching imagery conveyed through the lyrics teamed with crisp melancholy vocals that add to this nostalgic haunting tone. The track is narrated to us in a sway -like theatrical manner that touches your soul and pulls you in to this painful grievous tale. The light instrumentation to start adds a delicate quality to the track with the soft beats and gentle piano conveying the soft, innocent and hopeful young star. While the guitar seems to lament the death of this young woman the strings add a sense of danger lurking in the back ready to pounce. The backing vocals lull the listener as if trying to ease their mind of the harrowing scene and give comfort to a distressed soul.
A fantastic track from Áine Cahill look forward to hearing more.
You can catch Áine Cahill live at The Grand Social – Friday September 9th
