Apella have released a limited edition vinyl and CD of their debut album ‘1963’, alongside the brand new single ‘Buried You’. Since the album was digitally released on January 29th, it has been going from strength to strength with a whopping 500,000 streams racked up to date. Pre-orders for the physical release launched in January via apellamusic.com with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this album going directly to The Marie Keating Foundation specifically to help fund the outstanding support services they provide to women affected by Breast Cancer.

Bouncing between an effervescent pop chorus and earnest verses, ‘Buried You’ is a fizzing electronic-infused pop-punk/ indie banger from Apella. The band depicts heartbreak through this dynamic tune as brooding verses, that are smeared with dark undertones simmer into a bright pop chorus that is so catchy you will have to prise it from your head. The song displays the expressive songwriting and ever-shifting musicianship of Apella. Venturing into heavy electronics the track whirls and coils around dizzying synths and a hyper wall of sound. As a rampant bassline weaves between punchy drums and effervescent electronics the track spirals into the exhilarating chorus. Apella blend lush textures with rich soundscapes and shake them up to create a fizzing anthem while heart-stopping melodies and meaningful lyrics add weight and depth “I trembled at the thought of moving on, you surrendered all hope before hope was gone”. Dara Quilty’s vocals balance the tender lyrics and explosive soundscapes with ease. His coo’s ebb and flow with the instrumental turmoil providing emotion and anthemic power throughout. The track is such a joy to the senses and a fine display of musicianship from Apella.

‘Buried You’ is accompanied by a vigorously high energy, vivacious music video directed by Ray Keogh. Talking about the video Director Ray Keogh said: “I have been part of the Apella journey since inception and this music video captures everything they represent. Quilty and Nolan are two extraordinarily talented performers. We set it up and executed this video just like we were headlining a music festival! This is Apella. I am incredibly proud of this.”

Speaking of the album Dara Quilty said: “The response to the album on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube has been overwhelming. I still enjoy opening up my phone and simply seeing it exist in the world. As I mentioned before, we’ll be donating 100% of all the physical sales proceeds directly to The Marie Keating Foundation. Up against COVID-19 and BREXIT, I am delighted that production is complete and we can finally release our beautiful Vinyl and CDs! I am eternally grateful to everyone who has pre-ordered and we’ll continue to donate sales after the release date!”

100% of the proceeds from this album bought on apellamusic.com will go directly to The Marie Keating Foundation’s Positive Living support group, Survive and Thrive programme, BRCA awareness and support programme and School’s Cancer Awareness Programme.

Tommy Cullen ‘Night Moves’

Tommy Cullen has released his new single ‘Night Moves’. Like many of us, Tommy Cullen spent 2020 locked away in his house. Perhaps more unusually, that house is essentially a small house-shaped box and sits on top of a river in the middle of a city. Here, Tommy spent a turbulent year creating songs about scary sharks, imaginary breakups, existential adventures and nice trains. The latest in a series of home-recorded singles, ‘Night Moves’ was written last year during Ireland’s first lockdown. The song has a delicate and plaintive tone, revealing a yearning for contact in a time of universal hurt. It was mixed by Marcus Jay and mastered by Ivan Jackman, while the single’s artwork features photography by Joanna O’Malley.

‘Night Moves’ is a beautifully melancholic and soothing song wrapped in the tender songwriting of Tommy Cullen. This wonderful gem floats upon soft guitar strums and wispy soundscapes, creating a calming, gentle number while Cullen injects a sense of longing through the poignant lyrics. His warm vocals croon, “Breathe deep, draw slow,The city’s putting on a show, No name, two friends, waiting for the world to end,” allowing the bittersweet melody drift through the airy and almost haunting soundscapes. Cullen’s ability to express a range of emotion through minimalist arrangements is mesmerising. He conveys the pain, and numbness of loneliness through warm and calming instrumentation along with innocent twinkles on piano and lush harmonies. ‘Night Moves’ is a remarkable and moving tune from Tommy Cullen. .

NÍV ‘Home’

NÍV has released her new single ‘Home’. NÍV is the alias for Niamh Murray, a Kildare singer songwriter from Maynooth. Since launching her solo career as NÍV, a little over a year ago, she has already gained many achievements. In March 2020, Nív sold out her first Single Launch in The Workman’s Club for her single “Silly Voices”. Nív was added to RTE Radio 1’s Recommends List. She was also shortlisted for Four Star Pizza’s Star Nation Competition as a Leinster Provincial Winner. On Spotify alone, in one year, NÍV has gained 15k new listeners across 73 countries.

Within ‘Home’, NÍV creates an ethereal soundscape that caresses the ears in emotive songwriting and elegant musicianship. This sweet and tender track flows with earthy tones and cosy folk as supple guitar twinkles through crisp piano and ambient soundscapes to create a soothing and beautiful tune. The space within this track instantly calms the mind, while layered vocal harmonies provide a timeless mystical quality. NÍV uses her poetic lyrics and a dreamy melody to create a hue of nostalgia and vivid imagery as she coos, “There’s a place beyond our fears, Only laughter no more tears, Where our bruises disappear, As our mother holds us near”. ‘Home’ is a time-stopping and stunning song displaying the raw talent and superb songwriting of NÍV.

Talking about the single, NÍV says “This song has ended up meaning quite a lot to me. It was written during the very first lockdown and so you could say it’s a gateway into my mind and what it was feeling at that time. As a result of the pandemic, I think that people haven’t been able to make it back home to see family and friends. I think as well everyone is missing what life was like before all of this began. Those kinds of feelings are where this song came from. It’s an echo of the warm nostalgic feeling that goes hand in hand with memories of home.”

Jim McHugh ‘Hey Jimbo’

Jim McHugh has released his new single ‘Hey Jimbo’. The track is the second offering from his forthcoming third album ‘Pretending to Wake Up’ due May 28th. With two albums already under his belt, McHugh has garnered an impressive list of supporters with multiple singles added to the RTE 1 Recommends list and being chosen as the ‘LMFM All Out Local Song Choice’ as well as Roddie Cleere’s ‘Song of the Week’.’Hey Jimbo’ was recorded, produced and mixed by Alex Borwick (Parliament Funkadelic, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Niamh Regan, Sput Searight, Lankum) at Black Mountain Studios, Jenkinstown and Wynne Wynne Studio, Dundalk. It was mastered by Fergal Davis (Sinéad O’Connor/Muse) and features Paul McCabe on bass, Butch McNeill on drums and Alex Borwick on trombone.

’Hey Jimbo’ is a lively, gritty tune as McHugh propels raw riffs over a thunderous drum display to create his punchy rock backdrop. Following on from his tantalising release, ‘Dave’, the song continues McHugh’s venture into a darker, more raw rock aesthetic. Brimming with energy and a relentless percussive onslaught, ‘Hey Jimbo’ spirals into motion as the clamorous drums lead into the bluesy soaked riffs and beefy bass lines, creating a thrilling soundscape for the listener to indulge in. Throughout the song, themes of desperation, tension and yearning come to the fore and are deftly expressed through biting arrangements and instrumental embellishments. However, it is through the lyrics and McHugh’s expressive vocal delivery where the themes truly hit home. McHugh sings “Hey Jimbo She don’t love you, Hey Jimbo you’ll see, In the morning, she will leave you.” – the hard-hitting, earnest lyrics skillfully express the distress and uncertainty within the song which is greatly enhanced by the instrumental backdrop.

McHugh is developing his passionate and edgy sound superbly, creating tunes that exude an infectious swagger and anthemic might. Boasting an impressive full-bodied sound and slick musicianship, ‘Hey Jimbo’ is a lean, mean well-orchestrated tune from Jim McHugh. Love it.
