A Chat With: Isaac Butler

Irish Pop/Rock artist Isaac Butler has released his highly anticipated new single ‘Good Enough’. Last week I caught up with Bulter to discuss how he crafted the song, his plans for the coming months and his upcoming headline show in Whelan’s main room on Friday, 31 March.

“I actually wrote it on a piano with a good pal of mine. He plays with me live as well, Jake Richardson. We wrote it together on the piano. Then I wanted to have that big live feel to it so for me electric guitars are just the way forward. I’ve kind of fallen back in love with them and I think everyone’s gonna see that. It’s very obvious in the upcoming tracks and stuff, I’m kind of going for that big live sound vibe. Obviously, the electric guitar lends itself to that, but yeah, exciting stuff, really.”

Within the track, Butler takes a tender stance and highlights it with vibrant indie pop instrumentation. The result is a glorious sing-along anthem that is a joy to listen to.

“Yeah, it’s funny that the song started out quite sad. It’s a sad song if you really break it down. It’s funny when I wrote it, it came from quite a vulnerable place. But we came back to that when we were producing the five or six songs and obviously “Good Enough” was one of them, but we came back to it at a time where I was very much over what had happened and where that song came from. So it turned from this tender, vulnerable side to this kind of more brash, angry thing. Production-wise and even performance-wise that song, it’s angry, you know, there’s a bit of grit there. So yeah, it was an interesting exercise really going from that tender spot to one of I suppose, anger really, is the word.”

Butler has a knack for releasing wonderfully crafted videos to accompany his songs. I asked if he has one planned for ‘Good Enough’.

“Yeah, actually funny enough we’ve done a live band performance, which I’m going to probably release on Monday, I think. Then I’m actually headed off, so, the opening verse line is “that weekend in Paris”. So myself and Peter are heading off to Paris tomorrow morning, we got some cheap flights so we thought why not? Let’s actually lean into this a little bit and get some authentic vibes in there. But yeah, so we’re off to Paris to film. It’s gonna be a simple, enough video, but yeah, looking forward to that and I’m excited to share.”

Lyrically the song is powerfully emotive, relatable and honest. I wondered if Butler was unsure whether he was going to release this song or if its earnest lyrical content was difficult to put out into the world.

“No. It is definitely my most honest and probably my most personal song I’ve released to date but I knew once it was written that I one hundred percent wanted it to be out. I performed it live a lot and I love performing it live because it is so honest. I connect to it quite strongly and then obviously, in that live setting people understand and connect to it when I’m singing because I am so passionate about it. It’s a true story so it’s easy for me to really get into it and I think people appreciate that. So yeah, it was a no-brainer for me to be honest. I love it.”

Like all of his previous songs, this single has a wonderfully catchy chorus that evokes images of live crowds singing back the lyrics. Butler is set to headline Whelan’s main room with a full band on Friday, 31 March and I wondered what his hopes were for the show.

” Well first of all, thanks so much. That’s a really nice compliment. I hope and pray that they do. But yeah, Whelan’s is coming up soon. This show is definitely going to be for me a complete level up. Not that I don’t always put a huge amount of effort into the shows but this one in particular we’ve really been behind the scenes working hard on getting everything right from the production to different instrumentation and even lighting and stuff like that. So I  think people will be excited to see that we’ve really levelled up here. So yeah, I’m really excited to just get out there again. Whelan’s is such an important venue to me. I’ve seen so many people that I love there and I’ve been there probably nearly 100 times. So to actually get on that main stage and headline it is pretty amazing to me. I’m very, very happy.”

Butler recently performed at the Ruby Sessions and we discussed how he found the experience.

“Yeah, I did the Rubies a couple of weeks ago. I love the Rubies to be honest and everyone there is so passionate about playing music, hearing music, listening to it so you really get that attention from everyone which is great. I think as an up-and-comer you get used to not being heard quite a lot in different shows and different gigs. So that’s one that really is close to my heart and I love the guys in there as well. They’re great.”

Butler is no stranger to the stage or the airwaves amassing over 2.5 million Spotify streams and selling out shows in The Grand Social, The Soundhouse and Whelan’s while also playing festivals across the country including Electric Picnic. Two of his previous singles have also been chosen as the ‘Select Irish’ Single of the Month across the Wireless Group and Butler told me how important that support is to him.

” Yeah, it’s amazing, it’s really amazing. To be perfectly honest, I was quite nervous to put myself out there and announce the Whelan’s headline, I was kind of like maybe I should test the waters a little bit more. So yeah, I do feel honored people are listening to me. I’m really hoping to get a whole host of new kind of listeners over the next couple of weeks and months. I think the summer is gonna be really, really important for me to get out there and I’m just looking forward to playing live again and meeting people as well. That’s such an important aspect to me. I love chatting to people after shows and hearing about different stories they have and all that kind of stuff. It is probably my favorite part. “

The first time I interviewed Butler, he was gearing up for a big summer of festivals and then COVID put a halt to his plans. We discussed the impact of COVID and how he overcame the shock of all those plans being pushed down the line.

” It was honestly, lots of people had awful times but yeah, it was heart wrenching to be honest. Everybody had to cancel shows. I had a clear plan and then for that to be taken away was difficult. But I suppose the other side of that is I got to write a lot of songs. I got to meet a lot of different writers, different musicians even and that really has developed me quite a lot. I think I’m much more mature now in my sound, and in the way I’m writing even the way I’m performing. I think I’m in a much better place to hopefully get in front of some more people and get more people listening and connecting. I think the songs are at a place where people will start hopefully connecting to them like I do.”

Isaac Butler is an ambitious and talented artist. His catchy indie pop songs showcase his depth, honesty and maturity. ‘Good Enough’ is a fantastic example of his earworm magic and diverse musical range. I’m looking forward to hearing the tunes Butler releases next.

Isaac Butler ‘Good Enough’

Irish singer-songwriter Isaac Butler has released his highly anticipated new single ‘Good Enough’. ‘Good Enough’ marks the start of a new musical journey for Isaac Butler as he embarks on what promises to be a very exciting 2023 – with the first quarter of the year seeing him set to headline Whelan’s main room with a full band on Friday, 31 March. Isaac Butler is no stranger to the stage or the airwaves amassing over 2.5 million Spotify streams and selling out shows in The Grand Social, The Soundhouse and Whelan’s while also playing festivals across the country including Electric Picnic. Two of Isaac Butler’s previous singles have also been chosen for as the ‘Select Irish’ Single of the Month across the Wireless Group.

Within ‘Good Enough’ Butler fleshes out his earnest songwriting over an intense backdrop of driving instrumentation and powerful melodic surges. The song boasts warm guitar refrains, driving beats and ethereal soundscapes that lift the track into an anthemic sing-along chorus. Butler’s soulful vocals create an emotive yet, warm atmosphere that carries the story along as he questions himself after a breakup, “maybe I did something wrong… maybe I just was not good enough”. Filled with lamenting keys, a hair-raising crescendo and an irresistible melody that will revolve in your head for days, ‘Good Enough’ is a compelling new single.

Speaking of the single Isaac Butler said: “Good Enough is the result of some post-relationship self-doubt. I think it’s only human nature to question yourself pretty intensely after something doesn’t work out. I love this one because there is what feels like a good balance of nostalgia and anger in there. The verses have a softness that describe those happy memories while the choruses are pretty gritty”

A Chat With : Isaac Butler

I caught up with Dublin singer songwriter Isaac Butler to talk about his new single ‘Change The Past’, how he brought the track which was originally written on piano to the cinematic single we hear today, his experience working with producer Philip Magee and what he has been up to during the last few months as well as his upcoming show in The Sound House.

Butler is one of the most pleasant artists to chat to; his cheery and positive outlook is infectious. We banter about past interviews I have had with him as well as living in a full house with our families over lockdown. Last time we spoke Butler told me he had many songs ready to go and he was deciding which track he was going to pick for his next release, ‘Change The Past’ came up trumps.

“ I kind of thought it was smart if I say so myself in terms of, I wish we could change the past in terms of all this kind of stuff (covid- 19) and prevent all that kind of thing.I just thought even sonically it’s moving towards where I eventually want to end up. It’s like that big anthemic band sound and I kind of touched on it with ‘Young Forever’ and with ‘Paranoid’. I took a bit of a detour which is fine, I mean, I love that song and I think it’s great and it’s opened a lot of doors…‘Change The Past’ I feel it’s just like the most kind of Isaac Butler song to date.“

Once again Butler is discussing a relatable theme in his new release. He is looking back on a relationship and thinking ‘what if I had done this differently’ and the nostalgic melody and cinematic soundscape reflect this beautifully. This sonically lush track has elements of synths and a full anthemic sound however it began much simpler

“I wrote the song on piano, so obviously there’s a bit of piano in there but the piano only features in the first verse. We’ve talked about this before, I try to write a song around a hook that people can sing. First and foremost, I write a song about something that’s important to me, but I just love the feeling in a room where you can teach something to somebody if they haven’t heard it before, and they can sing it back straight away. I’ve done it in every song pretty much to date like ‘Young Forever’ we had the chant, ‘Paranoid’ you have that funny kind of hook noise, and here again we have this big anthemic chant, and even the chorus it’s a two line chorus “I wish I could change the past. I thought we were gonna last” and in between that we have that big hook. So, I suppose, I wrote the song as a small acoustic song on a piano but the second I came up with a chorus I knew this was going to be a big sounding full band, kind of unifying people, singing along and I think it’s so relatable. I think it ties in nicely to that hook where people can sing along because people have all experienced in some way, shape or form wanting to change something in their past.”

The release comes hot on the heels of recent radio hit ‘Paranoid’ which has racked up 4.86M impressions to date and broke into the Top 50 of the Overall Airplay Chart – at the time the only self released single in not only the Top 50 but the only self release in the Top 100 – as well as climbing to 13 in the Top 20 of the Irish Airplay Charts.’

If that isn’t impressive enough, Paranoid was also chosen as ‘Song of the Week’ on 2FM’s Breakfast with Doireann and Eoghan and as the Select Irish ‘Track of the Month’ for June. Last time I spoke with Butler, he had just released ‘Paranoid’ and he was wondering how well the song would do and how long it would be before it would take off but it was pretty quick to get recognition. I wondered did that give him comfort with the release of ‘Change The Past’ or did he feel just as nervous.

“ For sure, yeah. It’s funny because it should really bring comfort but I mean they are so different and obviously for me it’s all about the stories I tell because they’re all personal stories and the vocal, so it’s always going to be a consistent Isaac Butler sound because of the vocal and because of those themes that I write about. Production wise we went on a completely different direction, so it was like okay, ‘Paranoid’ has open loads of doors, but do we release another song that is similar to that or do we go with a more authentic-y pop rock sound?’

I just had to go with my gut really I mean this is the music that I love and it’s the music that I want to make more of, so yeah that’s really how picked it. It was just my favorite one really of the bunch and I thought I had the ears of people after ‘Paranoid’ so I thought why not show them me”

Butler worked with producer Philip Magee (Kodaline, The Script, The Academic), for this release and he’s become quite the mentor to Butler. Philip Magee is such a diverse producer and seems to bring out the best in the artists he works with and Butler considers Magee’s input important vital to his music’s growth

“ Yeah, 100%. I had a lot of ideas myself, I was involved in the production as well.. for me it’s striking a balance of someone that can give ideas but also take what I want and how I am. Myself and Phil just click in terms of vision for songs because I’ve produced tracks with loads of different producers, and I’ve never clicked with someone in terms of vision so well. He’s just so open minded and he is always respectful, he always listens. It’s a team effort which I love. I mean I’ve experienced things where it hasn’t been a team effort and it just really takes the wind out of your sails and it takes away from it for sure when people put their own stamp on it. Phil puts his own stamp on it but he makes sure the artist comes through and I’m forever grateful for that.”

“Yeah I think the right producer is just super important. You can literally make an acoustic song sound like anything now, it’s just finding out what production is best for me as an artist but also what compliments the song as much as possible. I think we really hit a sweet spot here, there’s a lot of real elements, there’s lots of electric guitars and real drums and all that and obviously it’s very vocal heavy, which I love. I mean, all the music I listened to growing up is all like that, acts like The Killers, Sam Fenders they do a great job at bringing those real sounds back, The Academic as well, all real sounds.. doing an amazing job and just paving the way again for that authentic sound to come through again. I think, with this, we’ve gotten the perfect mix in terms of those nice electronic sounds, but also the real elements, because I’m a live act, I’m an artist that flourishes live. I think that’s just so important and yeah I’m really happy with how it came out”

Again live shows come up in our conversation or the lack thereof and although Butler was gutted when he heard he couldn’t do any shows for a while he is beginning to enjoy life outside of the live circuit.

“ It was super tough to take at the start. I had worked so hard for a good couple years, and for the first time, I had numerous festivals signed on for them and I had a Kodaline support slot in The Olympia, with my headline coming up in October, so it was a really nice moving summer and then for that to be kind of taken away was obviously really not great, but, it really is about just finding the silver linings. I’ve been traveling a lot across Ireland the last few months with my girlfriend and doing things that I wouldn’t have done had Covid not happened. As terrible as Covid is and as terrible as it has been for lots of people it really has allowed me to focus on other areas that I neglected a little bit and it’s allowed me to grow in a sense as well.”

Everything was moving quite fast and it allowed me to stop and say ‘oh well this is what you’ve done and this is how you can make it better’. I’ve finally come to terms with it, and it’s taken obviously a long time but, yeah, it’s just trying to be as positive as I can really and I’m the eldest of five kids and there was seven of us in our house, it was challenging for sure but we had such a nice time you know. We spent so much time together.”

Butler did an impressive music video for ‘Paranoid’. Mustering his creative genius during the Covid-19 lockdown, he sprang into action and filmed the video completely in isolation. I wondered what he had in mind for the video for ‘Change The Past’

“So, yeah, well, I want to give this song, video wise,  as much justice as I can. So for the moment, I posted a lyric video the day it came out. I have a really nice acoustic video that I shot a couple of weeks ago, just in my garden. So I’m using those two at the minute but I’m going to give the track time to breathe. It takes time to get picked up by numerous people so I’m hoping that happens and then I’m hoping in a couple of weeks to bring out a video but I’m thinking kind of like my previous music videos but just a bit more cinematic..it’s gonna be cool though.”

Butler has been busy with his social media content – with the lockdown and covid we have discussed before about how social media has been helpful with connecting with artists and with keeping people sane and connected, but before this, social media was sometimes considered a source of anxiety for people and Butler did feel that pressure to keep visible and to keep content out there for a while.

“I certainly did. I definitely did at the start, and I would find myself almost not posting for the sake of that. I think that’s where anxiety stems from…there’s not a huge amount going on, there’s only so much acoustic videos you can post and only so much live streaming you can do and all that. I suppose in recent weeks I’ve kind of taken, not a break, I’ve definitely taken my foot off the pedal in terms of social media. Honestly that’s just to give me a break really, and yeah you’re right I mean when there’s not much going on in terms of getting out and doing things live and stuff like that, I think that’s just where the pressure starts when you think ‘oh God I need to post I need to post’ but you really don’t. At the end of the day, I’m a musician and I like promoting and I like interacting but it’s not the main focus for me at all. You know what I mean?, I do love the interaction and I reply to messages all the time. I’ve never not replied to a message and I love doing it and I love the comments and all that kind of stuff, positive or negative, by the way. I think you’re right, you’d just be kind of clutching at straws in terms of what to post.”

Butler’s show in The Sound House is now rescheduled to the 11th of March next year. Our conversation moved on to whether or not he felt this was going to go ahead.

“It’s crazy to say but yeah..there is obviously always a little niggle in your head to say ‘oh, that it won’t be on’ but I’m preparing for it to be on the 11th of March. It’s all I’m really preparing for at the moment so I have the setlist. I’m just gonna basically make that show the best that it could possibly be. I’ve got, probably a half a new set as well which is great.”

Butler has plenty of songs ready to go and singles he is really proud of. Hopefully we get to hear them later in the year.

“Yeah, so I have a lot of songs that are literally ready to go. I’m in two minds about an EP or singles, but I think again just singles. I have so many songs so I just want them all to see the light of day. I’m thinking if I go the singles root, there’s just no way all of them will be released, you know, but then I’m just battling with should I release an EP and then do some of them get lost? It’s a good problem to have a lot of songs. I just have to decide how I’m going to approach releasing them but the focus now is on ‘Change The Past’ so I’m going to give that the best go and then I’ll decide what the next move is after that.”

Isaac Butler is constantly building and crafting his songwriting skills and tunes to create a sound that reflects his versatility and ambition as an artist. Each track he releases shows a different and intriguing side to his passionate musicianship while also giving us a catchy hook and sweet earworm melody soaked in emotion to indulge in. His songs are already set for arenas and mass sing-alongs and this artist is only getting started. It is fantastic news to hear Isaac Butler has more music ready to go. I’m looking forward to his future releases.

Isaac Butler ‘Change The Past’

Isaac Butler has just released his highly anticipated new single ‘Change The Past’, produced by Philip Magee (Kodaline, The Script, The Academic), today. The release comes hot on the heels of recent radio hit ‘Paranoid’ which has racked up 4.86M impressions to date and broke into the Top 50 of the Overall Airplay Chart – at the time the only self released single in not only the Top 50 but the only self release in the Top 100 – as well as climbing to 13 in the Top 20 of the Irish Airplay Charts.’Paranoid’ was also chosen as ‘Song of the Week’ on 2FM’s Breakfast with Doireann and Eoghan and as the Select Irish ‘Track of the Month’ for June.Isaac Butler’s show at The Sound House is now rescheduled to 11 March 2021, with all original tickets valid for the new date. It is his second headline gig, having sold out his debut in Whelan’s last November and follows a jam-packed festival season in 2019, which saw Isaac Butler play a host of dates around the country including Electric Picnic and Kaleidoscope.

‘Change The Past’ builds on Isaac Butler’s cinematic pop as he continues to perfect his musicianship by spreading emotive earnest lyrics over synthesisers and lush melodies. Lamenting piano introduces the track which then blossoms into a smashing pop banger. With twinkling guitar, biting electronic soundscapes and trademark backing vocal hooks the song maintains that epic live audience sing-back the lyrics aesthetic we have come to know from Butler.

The passionate yearn of his vocal delivery distinguishes him from other aspiring songwriters as his velvety tone can croon like the best of them, however it’s in his hair raising dynamics for the mighty chorus where the power in his vocals truly shines. Butler captures timeless relatable moments within his songs whether it is candidly detailing the breakdown of a romantic relationship in ‘Paranoid’, that sense of freedom in ‘Young Forever’ or the gut twisting emotions which surface if one asks themselves the question “what if I had done this differently? ”- in ‘Change The Past’; Butler gives his unique view on these universal thoughts and emotions.

The track displays Butler’s knack for catchy dreamy melodies as it swoops and swirls sonically into an intense crescendo and an ending that will surely give you goosebumps. Isaac Butler is quite the impressive singer songwriter. His ability to create emotive music which is relatable to anyone who hears it is admirable. ‘Change The Past’ is another elevating and impressive track from Isaac Butler.

Speaking of ‘Change The Past’ Isaac Butler said: “I recorded the song in the Mill Studio’ with Phil Magee. This is the second track we’ve done and he’s become a great friend and mentor to me. He’s been so important in shaping my sound and I can’t thank him enough. He’s also just the nicest man in music. Doesn’t matter who you are/what you’ve done, Phil treats everyone the same. A legend in the Irish music scene!”

A Chat With : Isaac Butler

I caught up with Dublin singer-songwriter Isaac Butler to chat about his recently released new single ‘Paranoid’ and how he’s keeping busy during lockdown.

‘Paranoid’ is a great track filled with summer vibes, rich instrumentation and Butler’s sweet musicianship however the lyrics have a melancholic tone that candidly details the breakdown of a romantic relationship. Hindsight gave Butler an easier perspective on the tracks theme providing him with the ability to take an upbeat stance musically on the topic

“It wasn’t a difficult song to write, no. I think it’s because it is brutally honest. I wrote it in like half an hour. I wrote it on an acoustic guitar. It’s a really simple song structurally. It’s brutally honest so I mean I wasn’t really looking for places to take the lyrics from and Its probably the most personal song I’ve released so far. Definitely the most honest. I wrote it about something that was so far back in my past so I wasn’t still personally affected by it. It was a nice song to write because it was so autobiographical.

I’ve listened to so many interviews of great songwriters and artists that I love. Brandon Flowers of The Killers is one of them and he says that something happens to him and then he has to take time to almost process it. Like say something happens the day before and you write a song, maybe sometimes that happens for some people but it doesn’t for me. An event might happen in my life or to a friend or to me and I would come back to that like six months later and that’s when the song seems to come because you write it from a place of hindsight. It’s not like you’re really happy about something that happened yesterday or you’re really sad and you write a super happy song or a super sad song, you have that time to reflect and get every angle into it. It’s funny because you listen to the song first and you think ‘oh ! It’s a happy summer song‘ but if you put it under the microscope and listen to the words and take away the production and stuff it’s actually really cynical which I love about it.

My favourite songs are the songs that are angry or sad songs that sound happy. You know the Shawn Mendes song ‘My Blood’, it’s super upbeat and even production wise there’s big guitar parts and it’s quite rocky with a festival feel but it’s a song about anxiety you know, it’s a dark song and it sounds great. The 1975 are so good at it.A lot of their songs sound really happy but their lyrics are actually almost shocking at times which I think is really interesting. That’s kind of what I try to do.I think it went well.”

‘Paranoid’ has an insanely catchy, electronic vocal hook that just sticks in your head all day. Butler told me how he came up with the hook and the process of making the features the track pivots around

“The day I wrote the song I demoed it up with Robert Grace, he produced the song.He also helped me write it. From the get go we had that hook, the do do do do and that’s actually just me talking into a mic and he kinda messed with it on the computer and we built the entire song around that. I like to call it catchy but I think it’s getting quite annoying for people.I think it’s one of these songs that doesn’t leave your head so people are loving it at the moment but I’m gonna fear for my email and my messages in like 10 months when people are sick of it and want me to shut up.Its funny but I love it. The electronic production was definitely a decision we made early on “

This isn’t Butler’s first time writing a vocal hook or melody that sticks firmly in your head. His knack with earworm melodies feature in nearly all his releases in some shape or form and he clearly has a talent for writing tracks that appeal to his listeners considering his previous releases ‘Moon Song’, ‘Rescue Me’ and ‘Young Forever’ have together racked up over 1 million streams on Spotify so far.

“ I really love having a hook. As of late I tend to write songs around a melodic hook or a chant. When we spoke last, when I released ‘Young Forever’ we talked about the ‘oh oh oh’ and I started with that for that song and I have another song coming out called We Were Alone and I wrote it around a line that said and ‘we were alone oh oh oh oh’, you know I love writing around a chant. For me the whole thing about doing this is doing it for the live show. Which is a bit bleak because there are no live shows now but I love creating that atmosphere in a room or at a festival or wherever, so people can hear something and by the time the second chorus comes around they know it.For me going to gigs, that’s what I love. Just being able to sing along. I don’t always do it and I don’t feel like I have to put in something like that but if I can I do like to do it.”

Even with the covid-19 lockdown Butler has still managed to record a music video for ‘Paranoid’. It hasn’t been easy for artists trying to create content and learning new IT skills while dealing with cancelled shows and festivals this summer. Butler’s headline show at The Sound House is now rescheduled to 9th October 2020, with all original tickets valid for the new date. It’s a difficult time to navigate through but Butler has taken it in his stride.

“ Well normally I would have my good friend Peter Barnes who has done every video so far, but I can’t meet him now unfortunately. So I shot it yesterday in my room. I won’t give too much away but it’s me in my room and there’s gonna be three of me in the video. It’s like three little Isaac’s interactions with each other. It could be dangerous but no it’s good. It’s fun and I shot it on my iphone and I did it myself with help from my family. It’s funny the Covid thing has forced me to learn how to do some of the stuff on my own. I would have alway gone to Peter, let’s say and he’s still editing the video for me but I shot it myself. Even all the graphics for ‘Paranoid’ and the promo graphics for before the song came out I did myself and that was just because I was forced to learn how to do it, which is great!

I felt kind of terrible about things at the start of this because I had to postpone a headline show and had all my festivals cancelled, I had a Kodaline support slot lined up for June for one of their Olympia shows. It would have been amazing, it would have been my first time in the Olympia in front of a sold out crowd. You know it’s a similar kind of music, I think the crowd would have enjoyed it, I would have loved it obviously. So that was a bit of a kick in the teeth but listen everyones in the same boat and I’m in no way complaining but it was definitely a bit of a blow because I’ve spent the last two years building and then when things finally started to happen I’m swept under my feet a bit and that was tough to take but I’ve been productive in other areas. The live shows are gone but I’ve been writing loads, creating content and figuring things out. I’ve got a new logo made , I did my first brand collaboration with River Island and that was really cool. I did some live streams with you guys. I did one with Hot Press. I’m keeping busy you know but I’m buzzing to get back out playing live. I’m excited because all of these new songs I just want to test them out.”

So here we all are in a crazy lockdown pandemic and Butler is whacking out wonderful live and acoustic versions of his tracks on his social media with a sublime Ukulele version of Paranoid most recently. He is becoming quite the tech savvy pro at it at this stage. His content is to a very high standard with wonderful background settings.

“Oh I’m not tech savvy at all. I should be but really I’m not. I’m living at home and I’m the eldest of five so I have two sisters and two brothers and I’ve got my mum and dad here so they are all keen to help.It gets them off the couch. We’ve got a little stone sort out-house thing at the back and it’s really lovely for the live streams. It’s nice for me and keeps the content fresh so I’m not just in my room or whatever. It’s nice especially in the long evenings when the sun goes in a bit and I put up fairy lights and candles and it creates a nice little atmosphere.”

One perk to being able to do the live streams is that fans still get to hear some exclusive unreleased songs. There are a lot of comments from fans during Butler’s live streams asking what songs he will release next. At the moment Butler is focusing on Paranoid but is thinking of which of his many unreleased tunes is next to be released.

“ It’s tricky. I mean ‘Paranoid’ came out about three weeks ago.I’m still going to let that one breathe. It’s funny because you put in so much effort for the pre-promotion for a song and then you put it out and it’s out and you have to then keep going after it. As in let’s say for my first release ‘Moon Song’ nothing really happened for 3 or 4 months and then it got picked up by a TV show so there is all that kind of stuff, especially because in the initial push on ‘Paranoid’, people seem to like it and radio really like it which is great. It got 2fm track of the week with Eoghan McDermott and Doireann which was amazing and it also got selected for FM104 Select Irish for the whole month of June so that also kicks in next week.So I’m just going to see how that goes and ride that little wave for a little while. The video is going to be out hopefully next Friday, if not the Friday after, so that will be an extra little push.

I’m going to let Paranoid breathe a bit. Yeah I have songs ready, it’s just about picking which one. People seem to like ‘Good Enough’. See this is where it’s tricky for someone trying to establish themself..do I put out another song that’s like Paranoid or do I put out another song that I love, it’s tricky to know. There’s loads of new people liking Paranoid so do I stick to that style for the next one? To be honest, I think no. I think I’ll put out the music that I love and that I think is great. It’s quite difficult now to really establish yourself with the whole streaming world. You know the way people are releasing singles instead of albums and EP’s. I think that is great because you can play around with different sounds like what I have done with Paranoid.

Paranoid is a really different song to Young Forever. It’s nice though it leaves doors open.It means I can mess around with things. I was always thinking do I have to be confined to one particular sound or genre and I just don’t think you do anymore. With the singles I think you can bring out two completely different songs and it not be weird. I write lots of different types of songs and I don’t think I should suppress that. If I write a pop song I shouldn’t be afraid to put synths behind that or if I write a band song like Young Forever I’m not afraid to put out a song like that. You can do it all live so why not? You do run the risk of confusing people but I don’t really think it’s an issue. If I think about it too much I will freak myself out. But it’s going really well and I’m going to just keep going.

So what has Isaac Butler got planned for the rest of lockdown?

“Well the rest of the never ending lockdown, I dont know. I’m going to keep going with the Paranoid stuff. I’m doing a couple of writing sessions a week whether its myself or with other people just to keep building my live reel of songs so when I need them they are there.I don’t think I’ll ever be scrambling for songs because I have spent the last three years writing and I do have a lot of songs that I believe in and I think will see the light of day eventually but yeah I think my plans for now are just keep going as I am and look towards maybe doing some sort of gig like a social distance kind of Covid gig in September/October. Have you seen the Gavin James Drive In thing he is doing? Obviously Gavin has that massive audience and he is like super established and I’m a huge Gavin fan so I’ll probably go to that but I think I’m definitely toying with the idea of that but to a smaller scale. There are people who want to come to a show so I want to do one. Even if it’s like 20 cars in a car park. Something like that could be cool.So I’m putting my attention to that.So basically, keep the Paranoid dream alive, then the follow up song figure that out and sort the campaign for that and then maybe look towards doing an outdoor gig somewhere”

Isaac Butler is a singer songwriter who writes catchy, heartfelt tracks and it’s great to see his live streams present his wonderful tunes through the perfect medium that is his voice and guitar  (or Ukulele at times). I’m sure when everything is back to normal his live shows are going to be hot topics of discussion. If he pulls off that drive in show I will be there for sure!

Isaac Butler ‘Paranoid’

Isaac Butler has just released his new single ‘Paranoid’, today. ‘Paranoid’ follows Isaac Butler’s previous singles ‘Moon Song’, ‘Rescue Me’ and ‘Young Forever’ which have together racked up an amazing 1 million streams on Spotify so far.Isaac Butler’s show at The Sound House is now rescheduled to 9 October 2020, with all original tickets valid for the new date. It is his second headline show, having sold out his debut in Whelan’s last November and follows a jam-packed festival season in 2019, which saw Isaac Butler play a host of festival dates around the country including Electric Picnic and Kaleidoscope.

‘Paranoid‘ is a bubbly sprinkle of the infectious, honest and wonderfully melodic songwriting of Isaac Butler. Doused in summer vibes the track drifts effortlessly along Butler’s smooth passionate vocals and light breezy melody while glossy guitar-licks radiate warm golden sunshine. It’s an upbeat number with an ethereal scorching soundscape while the lyrics, which candidly detail the breakdown of a romantic relationship provide a wonderful contrast. Butler has provided an enjoyable, buoyant radio ready track with depth and substance. The catchy vocal hooks teamed with crisp production and lustrous musicianship make ‘Paranoid’ one satisfying summer tune.

Speaking of ‘Paranoid’ Isaac Butler said: “It’s about a relationship I was in and totally had the feeling I was getting messed around but constantly being told that nothing was going on. The music is happy and upbeat but ironically it’s quite a cynical song. I wrote it as a reflection on something that was a bad situation at the time but that doesn’t bother me anymore.”
