Irish Artist Mechner has recently released his new single ‘Silence in my Wake’.2020 was a tough year for everyone worldwide, financially, physically and mentally. On looking back over the years events Mechner decided to mark the end of the year with an ode and tribute to those who have lost anyone.
A tender lo-fi track ‘Silence in my Wake’ displays the emotive and haunting music of Mechner. The complimenting and contrasting elements within this mellow track is both melancholic and soothing all at once. Showcasing stripped back production the song floats upon a folk tone. Acoustic guitar gently accompanies the warmth of Mechner’s vocals while soft glimmers on synths drift through the tracks spacious soundscape and bittersweet melody. As reverb distorts the songs soothing tone the tune ends on a ghostly outro…fading into stillness. ‘Silence in my Wake’ is a wonderful display of emotion and comfort from Mechner and a beautiful addition to his collection of compelling tracks.
Following the success of his recent single ‘Platinum’, Irish singer/songwriter Fintan McKahey returns with his new single ‘Goodbye’. The song was written and recorded in McKahey’s home studio in West Cork, where he is continuing the family legacy as the son of Stump drummer, Rob McKahey and the nephew of Cousteau singer, Liam McKahey. Fintan started playing and writing music at a young age, and has been releasing music since 2016. An artist and producer, he is proficient across several instruments. His EP “God Games” received critical acclaim from national radio and press, as did his 2020 single “Platinum.” He has performed in major venues across the country, including support slots for the likes of The Scratch, Junior Brother, and Roisin O.
‘Goodbye’ is a vaporous lo-fi pop number which smoulders and broods through rich acoustic guitar, laid back beats and hazy mellow elements. McKahey has created a groove-filled number set for candlelit evenings. The track simmers through sultry tones and melancholic moods as the lyrics observe the struggle at the end of a relationship, when both sides are clinging on, in hope of salvation. Light guitars weave a zesty sting between the rich smooth tones while the sticky beat and R&B elements create a humid atmosphere within the track. ‘Goodbye’ douses intoxicating bedroom pop and soft twinkling keys in night-time tones to create a chilled and absorbing gem to listen to. Irish singer Ava Archbold provides a sweet and lush contrast to McKahey’s smoky tone as precise guitar lines ooze heartfelt passion between the tracks rooted groove. ‘Goodbye’ is a wonderful, intimate, ambient track and another sublime example of Fintan McKahey’s deft songwriting ability.

‘3’ is a laid back collection of tracks which showcase Lady Landscape’s earnest and melodic musicianship. Previously released singles ‘Versailles’, ‘25’ and ‘Apartment Song’ ease the EP into motion with glistening guitar, supple soundscapes and dreamy tones. The band use soft, delicate melodies with powerful lyrics to express the melancholic and irritating themes of self disappointment and normal life occurrences. With deep baritone vocals cruising through the hazy melodies and buoyant rhythm each track flows fluidly into the next making for a soothing listening experience.
I particularly enjoyed the use of acoustic guitar in tracks ‘Ghost Story’ and ‘WWII’. Theacoustic guitar chugs along sluggishly between the lulling elements with a nonchalant aesthetic. The band seep wispy synths and airy soundscapes into the tracks background making each song drift into the aerosphere allowing the deep vocals, steady beat and striking lyrics ground the track. ’2001’ brings the EP to an end with a bitter sweet melody and continuing the chilled out vibe of the EP.
‘3’ is an EP of moody, glum tones mangled between ethereal and dreamy soundscapes. The band discuss themes of growing older and the mundanity and disappointment of life through hazy calm tunes that drone as well as twinkle beneath the lo fi indie pop canvas. Lady Landscape’s soft and melancholic tones are filled with intricate moments and lush instrumentation. ‘3’ is a fantastic display of this. Lady landscape’s third EP is a smooth and satisfying listening experience.
Lav has released her new single ‘The Girls Before Me’. The track follows bedroom anthem ‘Wavvy’ and Billie Eilish co-signed lo fi garage-band cut ‘From Me The Moon’.The song is accompanied by a low-fi, 90’s VHS style video by Marielle Boland which captures an avant-garde picnic scene packed full of toys and scandal.
‘The Girls Before Me’ luxuriates in the hazy space between dream and reality as Lav delicately sprawls her soft vocals over a sweet melancholic melody and wispy soundscape. The entire song absorbs you in an endless and vast world of sombre longing as ethereal guitar twinkles through a lo fi soundscape while a pulsing beat grounds the track. The supple percussive taps and twinkles submerge the track in an almost magical innocence yet at the same time lament with a sorrowful undertone. Lav has created an enjoyable track filled with raw and honest vulnerability. ‘The Girls Before Me’ is a fantastic listen.
On the theme of the track Lav notes the song “was written out of a deep insecurity of constantly comparing myself to past loves. Always wondering if when they look at you, they’re recalling just staring into a paper mache they’ve built up of a before lover. Most of the time it’s all in our heads, and in this case it definitely was, however that didn’t make it any less real or painful to feel.”
Lav commented also on the video for the track saying “I love working with Marielle because she really helps my campy visions come to life. The video is a lot less emotional than the mood I got into while writing, and I think that makes the whole image more palatable, but also I loved to dress up and have a picnic with a bear and some snails.”

It’s a silky, smooth number as airy synths wisp about a spongy supple beat to create a soft mousse-like texture. The lo fi vocals caress the sombre melody with a monotonous tone as the moany lyrics discuss the effects of aging. With zesty stings on guitar the band inject a radiant sweet tone with a biting dash of indie into the lush dream pop soundscape. ‘25’ is another sublime mellow track to indulge in from Lady Landscape.
Glasgow five-piece wojtek the bear have released their new single ‘some states’ via Scottish Fiction.. The single continues the bands fruitful working relationship with acclaimed producer Jamie Savage at Chem19 Studios [The Twilight Sad, Miaoux Miaoux, The Phantom Band, RM Hubbert].The video for the single shot by Kris Boyle, sees the band expand on the darkly-comic theme of failure with a Nigel Mansell obsessed Killean trying, and failing, to emulate his hero’s exploits on the track. 2019 has seen wojtek the bear playing as part of Belle & Sebastian’s The Boaty Weekender, being play-listed twice by Radio X, and playing live in session for Vic Galloway on BBC Radio Scotland. Lead singer, and chief lyricist Tam Killean explains how the song came about,“it’s a song about that particularly painful end section of a failing relationship when it feels like all you’re doing is arguing with other person over the most ridiculous things, like who used the last of the toothpaste and didn’t replace it. The title comes from that old(ish) Scottish expression – “I’ve never been to America, but I’ve been in some states!” I just really liked the dark, self-deprecating humor of it. I think it’s that ability to see the humor in the darkest of times that allows us to get through things sometimes”.
