Cork band The Burma have recently recorded and filmed a live 15 minute set in Windmill Lane Studios.Since the release of their first single, ‘Quicksand’, the band has gained extensive national airplay and have received over thirty thousand plays across streaming platforms. The Burma have landed support slots for acts such as The Academic , The Strypes and Delorentos and have performed at festivals such as Vantastival , Doolin Folk Fest and Whelan’s Ones to Watch.
The Live at Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Dublin set is a collection of the bands infectious well crafted tracks as they showcase their live vigor along with some slick and wonderfully melodious tunes. The lush textures within their tracks are heightened by psychedelic moments meticulously blended with sharp guitars and pummeling drums which creates a full bodied sound. The melodies these guys produce hook you from the start and of course they pack this 15 minute set with their most delicious melodies so far. ‘Phoney Personality’ and ‘Buried Alive’ would be the pinnacle moments for me however this set has something for everyone: jaunty guitars, rich rhythms and oodles of passion and energy. The Burma are an impressive live act and a band well worth checking out and adding to your playlists.

Rising Indie Rock band The Burma have just released their new EP ‘Sugar Moonlight’. At various stages over the past year the Irish indie band have holed up in Monique Studios with producer Christian Best (Mick Flannery, O Emperor, Jack O’Rourke, Marlene Enright) writing and recording their latest release.
‘Sugar Moonlight’ is a tidy collection of tracks exuding passionate pop melodies and blazing alternative rock with a healthy dose of indie rock at its heart. The band go all out with this EP – luscious textures and melodious highs, psychedelic rawness and tender broods create a well rounded enjoyable listening experience.
The jubilous indie guitar jingle of ‘Same Again’ kick starts the EP. It is light and infectious as the ethereal guitars create a wonderful animated bounce. The Burma construct tracks with a rich rhythmic foundation of rippling bass lines and buoyant snappy drums allowing the charming guitar refrains to soar and flourish off this backdrop with majestic tonalities. The band swoon smooth melty melodies into their vibrant indie sound effortlessly. ‘Quicksand’ shows this superbly as the soft bubbly melody wisps delicately through a crashing psychedelic backdrop of airy stings on guitar and rumbling drums.
With a refreshing bite, each track rolls coolly into the next. Whether it’s the icy sting of the melancholic ‘When You’re Gone’ or the darker synth swirling prance of ‘Phoney Personality’, the band use their ability to intricately weave multi layered synth textures and melodies to create a seamless transition between tracks while still maintaining each songs own identity. Final track ‘Buried Alive’ closes the EP on a high. It’s not a sugar rush but a sweet tender and mesmerising high as The Burma present their most delicious emotive and beautiful melody yet. Caressed with soft tender vocals and slow brooding instrumentation the track flurries on a light airy soundscape of glistening guitar and pulsing beat. Each timeless twinkle and bass wriggle coils and curdles the backdrop in sombre wistful tones. The track builds superbly becoming more dynamic as, in true The Burma fashion the song reaches its hair raising crescendo.
The Burma have a wonderful ability to create rich proficient tunes with first rate instrumentation, exhilarating guitar lines and intricate bass lines that surge with character. Their melodies are irresistible, oozing emotive, dreamy and sweet tones while the lo- fi grooves and heavy rhythmic pulses provide the element that hooks your ears and leaves you craving more. ‘Sugar Moonlight’ is a mature and impressive EP that makes The Burma ones to keep an eye on.

Why We Like It: It’s a moody grunge drenched number brimming with sharp guitar riffs, gritty vocals and pounding drums as Y!KES present a melodic Californian punk side to their mammoth sound. Slinky guitar moments weave between a sweet melody and gripping undertone to create a moving and hopeful atmosphere immersed in old school rock charm. Y!KES are maturing wonderfully. Why We Like It: It’s a suave flaunty number that glides effortlessly on cool funky tones, jangly guitar riffs and 80’s shimmers. With a strutting backdrop, chiming keys and groovy bass this track wiggles and shimmies into your head with confidence boosting charm and infectious radiance. The smooth vocals coo the catchy lyrics before the spoken verses seep swagger into this glossy pop glistening number. With tasty synths and panache dripping from every note ‘Ooh!’ is a feel good song sure to have you dancing and strutting your stuff for days.

Brand New Friend’s debut album ‘Seatbelts for Aeroplanes’, was released through Xtra Mile Recordings (Skinny Lister, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.) in 2018. Why We Like It: This buoyant track swirls with Brand New Friend’s youthful indie musicianship. The band lather jangly guitar strides into a punchy drum and bass tag team while the harmonies between brother/ sister duo Taylor and Lauren Johnson sweeten the powerful sting. With a smooth catchy melody and lamenting guitar injection ‘Nothing Stays The Same’ is a vibrant nostalgic ditty sure to have any live crowd going wild.
Inspired by characters imagined by 80s indie veteran Lloyd Cole in his timeless ‘Jennifer She Said’ track, Brand New Friend’s ‘Nothing Stays The Same’ finds the band musing on just what may have happened next for its lovelorn protagonist… As the band explain: “‘Nothing Stays The Same’ is a love song constantly shifting perspective between two people. It’s the sound of two people who love each other deeply but who know they’re running out of distance. It’s framed in the Botanic area of Belfast, in the old Botanical gardens near Queens University. In the rain, of course. I was heavily inspired by Lloyd Cole on this track, I love the way he colours his world so you can see who he’s singing about when you close your eyes. The girl in this song is Jennifer, from ‘Jennifer She Said’. Hopefully it all works out for her…”

Why We Like It: This ethereal gem glistens with airy spacious tones. The twinkling guitar majestically creates little melancholic sparkles of scintillation through the icy soundscape as the flickering electronics and snappy beat create a biting breezy quality. The track builds to a tense crescendo that becomes more gritty with distortion and psychedelic hues. A smooth sombre melody weaves throughout creating a mysterious, almost magical effect as the band create a swirling track that totally immerses you in their richly layered musicianship.
